Something crazy happened, I'm super-miffed! <rant>

I guess most of you don't know. I'm currently studying from a University in Australia, over here in Singapore. Kind of like "online" studying. The system is simple, the lecture from the University, comes over here for a weekend, whereby we have a four day intensive lecture sessions. So, in four lecture sessions, we are suppose to have overviewed all of the module's material. Once these lectures are done, there is are 2 months, whereby we are to self-study and read, and submit a number of assignments online. The exam however, is written at a institution, where this institution has a real exam hall and invigilitators and everything. We write the exam as if we are on campus. Then these exams are sealed up and then mailed back to Australia, for the lecture to grade, and he would post the results online.

Now because it's all over-seas studying, there is a big time delay in results display. BUt usually not THAT long. So my class has now waited over 6 weeks for our results, only for today to receive an email, informing all of us that apparently our exam papers have been lost, apparently due to the transit between the two countries.

U-N-B-E-L-I-E-V-A-B-L-E !!!!

I wrote this exam at the beggining of July, this exam is suppose to be done and over with, now I have either RE-SIT for it in November (Yes, NOVEMBER, that is the only date when this course is being examined again...stupid? yes, very), or choose the other alternative whereby he averages our assignments that were done before the exam. (Mind you this is only two assignments).

So my marks for my two past assignments is determining my exam mark.

I'm angry, because I think I did super-well in my exam, and the exam itself is worth 65% of our final grade, while the assignments only are worth a total of 35% of the final grade. Can you see where I'm getting at??

There is really "no one" to blame, but BLAH!!!

It sucks.

I'm still deciding, but the prospect of re-sitting for an exam that is months away, and I'll sure have forgotten the information by then, is not good. But then also, the average of my previous papers also not good.

I am not happy.

Date: 8/19/2008 9:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 13119    they should actually be rewriting the exam as quickly as possible and you should not be penalized for the loss of the papers. An average of your two papers is not going to tell him what you should get because one paper was written prior to having the second half of the course, which means you could have learned something in the first half that was enhanced in the second and so your comprehension has gone up.
Date: 8/19/2008 10:03:00 AM  From Authorid: 998    Oh my, this is terrible. Since there is a real 'human' who collects your assignments for shipping, I would say that they should have made a copy before mailing them off. This can't be the ONLY time that this has ever happened .. maybe they will learn not to trust the mail exclusively.
Date: 8/19/2008 10:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 49546    From the letter they wrote to us, apparently it IS the first time that such an incident happened ^_- As for the copying thing, I doubt they are able to do that, because (1) the exam papers are sealed up, right after I submit it (2) I guess there might be the issue of tampering, or misplaced copied documents, stuff like that. Yeah, it's all too messy.
Date: 8/19/2008 5:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 63961    Wow, that sucks...but that's the frustration with online schools. Especially one overseas. I hope it gets worked out. Maybe they can give you all an automatic A!!! lol...
Date: 8/19/2008 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 55841    In your place, I would re-sit the exam. But, to prepare for it, I would make as many notes on my exam answers as I could remember, right now, while they are fresher in your mind than they will be a few months from now. If you took lecture notes, I would keep going over them and continue to study the material, with an extra push just before the exam. But then, that depends on your view on the class and whether it is worth it to you to put this much effort into it. (I tend to be an over-achiever...lol.) Best of luck!
